Changing your Fiverr gig tags, safely

Why tags are the riskiest field on a gig to edit, and a way to change them that you can always undo.

What tags do

Every gig has up to five search tags, set on the first step of the gig editor, letters and numbers only. Together with the title, they tell Fiverr's search which searches the gig is relevant to. Fiverr does not publish exactly how they are weighted, but their purpose is not a secret: they are how the gig gets matched to what buyers type.

Why they are the riskiest edit

Most edits change how a gig looks to buyers who already found it. A better description or image affects whether someone who opened the gig orders. Tags change who finds it at all.

That makes the failure mode different. Sellers widely report a temporary dip after any edit, which usually recovers. A tag you removed that was bringing in a steady search is not a dip: that search may simply stop showing your gig, and nothing about it recovers on its own. The forum is full of threads titled some version of "gig ranking drop after keyword change".

The real danger is not the change, it is forgetting. If you know exactly which five tags you had, a bad change costs you a few weeks. If you do not, it can cost you the gig's main source of buyers, with no way back to what worked.

A safe way to change them

  1. Write down the current five tags, exactly, in order, with the date. This is the one step you cannot do afterwards.
  2. Note your numbers from the Gigs page on the same day: impressions and clicks, with the period set to the last 30 days. You will compare against this.
  3. Change one or two tags, not all five. Keep the ones you have good reason to believe are working. If you change everything, you cannot tell which change mattered.
  4. Do not touch the title on the same day. Title and tags both affect search; changing both at once makes the result unreadable.
  5. Wait. Fiverr's own help centre suggests waiting at least 30 days after a change before judging it. A 30-day total also takes about that long to fully reflect a change.
  6. Compare, and put back if needed. If impressions fell and kept falling, restore the tags you wrote down in step 1.

Choosing the new tags

Use the words buyers actually type, which are often plainer than the words sellers would choose: "logo design" rather than "brand mark creation". The suggestions that appear as you type a tag in the editor are a reasonable starting point, since they come from Fiverr itself. Avoid repeating words that are already in your title; a tag that adds a new phrase covers more ground than one that repeats.

What we built, and why

Seller Changelog makes step 1 automatic. It is a Chrome extension that records your gig's title, tags and description each time you open the gig editor, and keeps every change — the exact old tags and the exact new ones — together with the impressions your Gigs page showed. When a tag change goes badly, the version that worked is one look away.
